Frequently Asked Questions

  • Does Cypress have an account minimum to become a client?

No. If the client is the right fit we are happy to have them as clients. If people are nice to deal with then we want to deal with them.

  • How is Cypress different from other portfolio managers?

Client education. A key differentiator for Cypress is ongoing client education about markets, return expectations, risk and volatility. The biggest mistakes in investing stem from behavioural mistakes that are best avoided through education.

  • Who is Cypress’ primary regulator?

Cypress is registered with, and regulated primarily by, the B.C. Securities Commission.

  • What other services does Cypress offer?

Cypress is focused primarily on investment management services. We work with outside accountants, lawyers and financial planners where necessary, but do not employ these professionals in-house.

  • What are the biggest mistakes investors make?

The two biggest mistakes investors make are: 1) failing to think long-term and 2) conflating risk with volatility.

  • How is Cypress different from the big banks?

We have no affiliation or pressure from anyone to buy specific investment products. We only invest in what we believe is appropriate for the client.

  • How quickly can I get my money out if I need it?

Clients can withdraw funds from their investments whenever desired. There are no lockup periods and typically funds can be sent to the bank account within a few business days.

  • Does Cypress offer ESG or responsible investing?

Yes, we can integrate ESG mandates into portfolios or exclude certain sectors (fossil fuel, tobacco & alcohol, etc).

  • Does Cypress have custody of the assets?

No. Cypress uses third-party custodians, primarily Raymond James. All custodial fees are included in the fee clients pay to Cypress.

  • Are managers available to speak directly to clients?

Yes, portfolio managers are available to speak directly to clients. There are no layers between the client and the individual making the investment decisions.

  • How are fees calculated?

One quarter of the annual fee percentage is charged quarterly in arrears based on the total market value of assets. Fees in non-registered accounts are tax deductible. Family assets are pooled together for the purposes of calculating fees. This allows for family groups to take advantage of the reduced fees on larger asset totals.
